Patti... the ghetto case build

I was recently approached by a friend of mine, asking me to make a "specs list", since she just got herself a budget for a school/gaming rig. So browsing TPC, I was able to make a list of components that would be great for school, and good enough for gaming(I had the games that she liked playing [Rainbow 6, HAWX, DiRT, and Prototype] in mind while making the list).

Everything costs 18k, and though she only has a 17k budget, adding 1k wouldnt be difficult... but well over her limit. The specs list I made didnt include a monitor, a dvd drive, and a casing. And after reading my worklog on Blackie, she then thought that it would be fun to just construct a case from something that can be found in her room. And that's how "Patti"(the name she chose for this particular build), came into existence.

First off, the goodies we just recently bought...

The mobo... she didnt want anything fancy. And we needed an AM3 mobo that would support.......

777_dsc00930.jpg
... DDR3 Rams. And I was able to find this 4gb set for only 5k. Yeahba!

I was able to find this used Triplex ATI Radeon HD4670 for only 2k.

Since I made a mistake of telling her that an AMD procie has a habit of getting too hot... my loving friend took the liberty of buying a procie cooler without consulting with me. But after reading reviews of the Athlon II X4 620, I think this Deep Cool Ice Blade Pro, is a bit excessive. But hey, it's her rig.

I advised her to buy this HDD 5.25 bay cooler... which I'll turn into a RAM cooler.

777_dsc00931.jpg
Cheap *** keyboard... she just wants something that works. No need to burn pockets for a gaming keyboard.

777_dsc00933.jpg
Cheap *** mouse... the title of this worklog should've been, "Anything That Works gaming rig".

Re: Patti... the ghetto case build

We havent gotten around to buying her procie, and the HDD. It's gonna be an Athlon II X4 620, and a Samsung 500gb hard drive. And the casing, will be built with unused illustration boards scattered in her room.

Of course, knowing me... I'd make sure that it wouldnt look like a "case made of illustration boards", once I'm done with it.

Dont ask why this project is named PATTI... I wouldnt be able to give you an answer that would make sense anyway. What's important is the consultation fee that I deserve for making the specs list, finding her the "cheap but nice" computer components that I could ever find. *ahem*

Building the casing is free of charge... she is after all, one of my closest friends. Hehehe.

Re: Patti... the ghetto case build

Ok, you'll notice, this isnt much of a worklog. Since everyone knows how to cut illustration boards and such, I didnt think it would be necessary to post pics of me cutting something without a Dremel. So, here are pics of my "National Bookstore Sustainable" case named Patti...

777_dsc00953.jpg
This particular case is composed of 93% illustration boards, 2% acrylic, 2% sticker paper, 2 % duct tape, and 1 % foil. The white colored portions are cut illustration boards and sticker paper. The rest, I spray painted blue, using Bosny.

777_dsc00954.jpg
The foil, I used for this "one-way mirror" effect in front of the case, behind the foil, is the digital temp reader that shows through the foil when it lights up.

Here you can see the hole, where the 200mm Coolermaster outtake fan will be.

This project is basically completed, but I'll post the pics of the case in action, as soon as I get my digital camera from my friend.

Made a slight modification on it, since I was almost done building the case, BEFORE my friend bought the Deepcool Ice Blade Pro.

Digital thermometer which shows, only when it's lit.

Fully functional, that's a 17inch LCD mounted on the wall, so you can use it for size comparison.

Thanks for viewing.

Re: Patti... the ghetto case build

Hi Gabriel,

Now that I remember, you like to work paper board mods which is great material as it is quite smooth. Patti is another fine Gabriel mod, no doubt about it!  I was going to suggest that you give it shot at the ModBros annual Cardboard Case Contest. This years contest ended a couple of months ago and you can see it here:

http://www.themodbrothers.com/viewforum … 39&start=0

No word on next years repeat of the contest but it is still pretty far away.  Take a look at the mods entered which are pretty complex, especially the Free Form winner who is a home forum member from Argentina, funny no?  It is his first out of his country and Latin America so I guess it is time for somebody from here, hehe.  Hope there is a repeat and think out about it, it is right down your alley.;)

Later Bro.

Yeah, I was able to view that contest. I loved everyone's entries. Kinda made me feel like a noob seeing their creations. big_smile

It's been awhile Papang. I've always viewed your entries, I'm glad you've decided to post them here. I'm a big fan of Sunny, and I noticed, both you and Sunny have similar principles in modding, that's why you automatically made me a fan of yours. big_smile Thanks for the info and the link sir. I do hope I could join the next contest.
